This past weekend I decided to install Windows 7 Beta…which means I’ve been reinstalling everything on my machine. This rebuilding process forced me to install Sitefinity ASP.NET CMS on a brand new computer.
I thought I knew the Sitefinity installation very well. However, I missed a step and spent too much time blaming Windows 7 for the Virtual Directory creation error I was getting. These led me to the Sitefinity forums and threads centered around this error. In the end, the installation steps for Windows 7 were identical to Windows Vista.
This blog post contains nothing that hasn’t already covered elsewhere. However, I’m writing this blog post for Google to index these error messages and provide help to anyone Googling these error messages.

Fixing the Sitefinity Virtual Directory Creation Error
If you’re getting this error I strongly recommend giving another look to the Sitefinity Installation Guide. Before installing Sitefinity there are several pre-setup steps. These steps are covered, in detail, in the Installation Guide. It’s easy to accidently miss one of these setup steps.
Pre-installation Sitefinity Installation Steps:
- Enable the Internet Information Services (IIS)
- Enable Web Management Tools
- Enable IIS 6 Management Compatability
- Enable IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility
- Enable IIS Management Console
- Enable Application Development Features –> ASP.NET
- Enable World Wide Web Services –> Common Http Features –> Static Content
- Make sure the World Wide Web Publishing Service is running
- Make sure the “Default Web Site” exists and is running
Complete these steps before installing Sitefinity. If you miss a single step, you’ll continue to get the Virtual Directory creation errors.
Installing Sitefinity as Administrator:
- Right-click the Sitefinity_[version].exe
- Click Run as Administrator
