Membership & Role Providers Webinar

This webinar examines user management and security in Sitefinity.

Out of the box, Sitefinity empowers you to easily manage CMS users and roles. However, there are alternatives to the default user management provided by Sitefinity. Sitefinity can also integrate with an organization’s Active Directory. In addition, an entirely custom membership provider can be created and applied to Sitefinity. In this webinar, we’ll explore various strategies for managing Sitefinity’s users and roles.

The notes page, referenced by this webinar, can be found here.

I truly appreciate everyone who attended this webinar live.  I apologize for my bad Internet connection that caused the audio and video problems.  The webinar posted above is re-recorded to eliminate some of the Internet problems I encountered on the live version.

This webinar covers the following topics:

  • Overview ASP.NET Membership & Role Providers
  • Overview of User Management in Sitefinity
  • Adding custom fields to Sitefinity’s Membership Provider
  • Overview of the Active Directory
  • Using LDAP to query the Active Directory
  • Enabling Sitefinity Active Directory Integration

    Gabe,

As always, fantastic webinar.  Your Active Directory user manager + custom role manager solution is exactly what I will be using for my company's intranet.  This webinar probably saved me weeks of self discovery.  The little plug for OpenAccess was great as well.  I have not looked into it at all, but now I do not think that I have a choice.

Thanks for all the hard work you do over there at Telerik, helping us newbs ramp up with Sitefinity development.

I really wish Sitefinity would handle Anonymous users.

The standard .net membership allows this.

Without being able to handle anonymous users, its impossible to attach a shopping cart to the profile or any other information.

I currently need to have a mix of Asp.Net membership and the Sitefinity membership to handle my anonymous users.  Its not pretty.

Maybe you can pass this on to the developers to have this fixed?!

    Gabe,
Thanks as well for this great webinar. However since implementing your hybrid Role Provider using OpenAccess I am now getting a SqlConnection does not support parallel transactions. error when editing Sitefinity pages. Below is a link to the Telerik OpenAccess forum topic that has been started on this error.

If anyone else is experiencing this then thsi may be a good place for you to start.

P.S. Gabe another good webinar piece I would like to see is one on the Sitefinity Profile provider and how to implement a custom one to work in conjuction with it. I have used ASP.NET profiles for awhile now, but have soem questions on the Telerik Implementation of it.

    Thanks!
